3 Tips for Moving During a Northeastern PA Winter

moving in the winter

We at BNT Movers are always concerned about the safety and welfare of both our customers and employees. As we all know in North East Pennsylvania, winters are treacherous for us and, worse yet, unpredictable.

We ourselves are located in Moscow, PA, where the higher elevations make for a more significant impact. While for some this may be seen as a detriment, we’ve made it an asset through our years of becoming weathered and learned movers.

Though there may be times that rescheduling may be necessary, there are some things that can be done to reduce those instances and to keep everyone safe and make your move an overall positive experience.

1. Ensure Access for Movers

First and foremost, make sure that the movers can access the entry to your pick-up address. We were recently moving in Clark Summit, PA, and we had to turn around because the driveway was not prepared for us. There was a coat of ice over the whole driveway that had been untended that proved to be too much of a hazard for everyone involved.

As all NEPA residents know, salt is incredibly important this time of year, but sometimes we forget that it is not just for the roads.

When preparing for the movers to arrive, make sure that any snow is clear out from the driveway and that, in the case of ice, that the driveway and entries are salted. This also helps protect your belongings that would go down with the mover should they fall as a result of poor property maintenance.

2. Remember to Dress Warm

Secondly, let’s not forget how to dress in the winter. We’ve all seen people out there, especially younger folks around Scranton, PA, that are wearing winter coats and shorts in the middle of a snow squall and single-digit temperatures. It can be agreed that this is a no-no.

Movers are going to be in and out of the house repetitively, which means the door will be open a lot of the time. This will cause a lot of cold air to be welcomed in and the warm air inside to be ushered out, so even indoors it will be important to dress warm. You can even make some hot coffee, or hot cocoa, and some snacks while you sit back and let us do the work!

3. Keep an Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle

Lastly, we recommend having an emergency kit in your vehicle. This is particularly important for long-distance moves. Pennsylvania movers often keep these on hand themselves, but sometimes customers forget that they’ve got a drive ahead of them as well, and it’s important to be prepared for any scenario.

Basics for your kit should include items like flashlights, blankets, bottled water, snacks, maps, a spare tire, and a first aid kit. While some of this may seem like overkill, it’s important to remember that anything can happen.

Years ago, good friends of ours were traveling from Scranton to Harrisburg after visiting for Easter. On the way, they hit a snowstorm that caused whiteout conditions.

An accident about a mile ahead of them caused traffic to back up and the snow to build around them in the car. They were stuck. Fortunately, they had blankets and water in the back, and, as was a tradition in the family, they were bringing home a ricotta pie from their visit. Over the hours, they were able to stay warm and hydrated, and by the time they got out, most of the pie was gone. They haven’t eaten ricotta pie since, but they were safe.

Now, keeping up with weather reports can help prevent such an event from happening, but in NEPA, we all know that it’s not uncommon to have a storm like that hit without warning.
